About The Panda Bear
The giant panda is undoubtedly one of the most distinctive and recognisable animals in the world. Also know as the panda bear, the bamboo bear, or in Chinese as "Daxiongmao", the "large bear cat", giant pandas have always held a special place in Chinese cultural history.
Pandas are bear-like in shape and have sharply contrasting black and white coloured fur. The head, top of the neck, and rump are white, while small patches of fur around the eyes, the ears, shoulders, front legs and rear legs are black. Adult pandas range in body length from about 160 to 190cm. The weight of an adult male panda is normally between 80 and 125kg, with males typically weighing about 10% to 20% more than females. When compared with other bears, the head of the panda is large in relation to its body. They also have very large molars, which are specifically designed to crush fibrous plant material.
Pandas are found only in south-western China, in damp, misty bamboo forests. They were once widespread but today they are limited to six small areas in provinces of Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu. Pandas are by nature solitary animals, except for females accompanied by cubs. They rely heavily on their sense of smell which they use to forage for food. Pandas live almost solely on a diet of bamboo, up to 15kg per day. They feed mainly on the ground but are also capable of climbing trees.
Unfortunately the beautiful panda bear is also one of the rarest animals in the world - with only roughly 1000 remaining in the world. The main threat to the survival of the pandas is the destruction of their habitat. Other animals, such as cattle, sheep and goats, graze on any emerging seedlings and prevent regeneration of the forest, and their hooves loosen the thin mountain soil. Due to the panda's dwindling numbers, the giant panda was officially listed as an endangered species. More steps need to be taken in the future to protect its habitat in order to ensure the survival of this beautiful and rare animal.
